A Real Life Zemira & The AOL Takeover (part 1)…

My original blog post was going to reflect on a negative enounter I had this week, but the Universe has a way of telling me to move forward. So I did. And when I woke up, I had two videos hit the internet!
I was interviewed by Mecca Woods of the film Zemira (an independent film about the coming of age of a young teen in The Bronx struggling to make her way). We discussed the needs of black girls as addressed by the media and the importance of positive role models. The conversation had me reflecting back to some memories of encounters with black girls and children that I worked with as well as my feelings that as an adult, you make choices wheather to be exploited or not.

Next, on my facebook wall, I woke up to this segment of myself and my good friend, film maker, Dorian Chandler. She made a film called “Nigger Nation” which discusses the contemporary use of the word Nigger.
In the segment, Dr. Boyce Watkins of AOL Black Voices invited us to speak on our use of the “N” word and it turnd out to be less scary than I thought it would be to discuss such a sensitive topic. But we did it, and it was actually….fun.

Last week I got the honor of being the first woman in several years to host the kickoff show on WBAI’s Hip Hop Takeover. The Hip Hop Takeover is a yearly marathon of ALL Hip Hop programming that airs for 12 hours straight, NO COMMERCIALS! So, I had to bring in the BIG GUNS!! I called my homegirl, award winning turntablist, DJ Chela to help me set the tone. And set it we did! From Noon to 1pm, we went hard on the classic hip hop tunes you know and love from Da Bush Babies to Guru to J.Dilla, we had it all! Peep the playlist below!

Relaunches & Takeovers!!!

JULY 2010 WHAT THE FRESH RELAUNCH:
The good people over at whatthefresh.com have featured me in their WTFisodes (a “day in the life of” styled mini-doc)! They followed me around, allowed me to wax poetic about the handicapped people on the train, and generally took my self esteem up a few levels. The finished product is super fresh, you can get to know me in a different light then we can hug cause we’ll be closer and whatnot (maybe?)..lol..

You know I always keep it moving so, this Saturday is The Hip Hop TakeOver on WBAI 99.5 FM!!
Yup, a “TAKEOVER”….we’re taking over the radio station from NOON- MIDNIGHT, JULY 10, 2010 with ALL Hip Hop programming from all walks of life and sub-genres! And, I (yup, that’s right…ME!) get to kick it off with the award winning DJ Chela from Noon- 1pm!! With the subpar “options” on the air now, this is a no brainer!
